The objective of Australia’s development program is to advance an Indo-Pacific that is peaceful, stable, and prosperous. A region that is predictable — where differences are resolved by international law and norms, and where we can cooperate, trade, and thrive. To achieve this requires sustainable development and lifting people out of poverty.
The Australia-Pakistan relationship is longstanding. It reflects genuine partnership through strong people-to-people links, cultural ties and shared interests in a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.
Australia provides development assistance in Pakistan through global and regional programs delivered locally. We support people in Pakistan facing poverty, inequality, and climate-induced risk.
In this context, Australia's development cooperation assists Pakistan to:
-
address the impacts of climate change, by supporting adaptation and building community resilience;
-
provide equitable access to essential services, particularly for women and children;
-
provide humanitarian assistance, including for those displaced; and
-
connect with and share in Australian expertise to further development.
The Pakistan Development Cooperation Factsheet provides more information on budget, sectors and achievements of Australia’s development cooperation in Pakistan.
These objectives align with and support Pakistan's development policy, Vision 2025, along with Australia’s International Development Policy, released in 2023.
Delivery of the Australian aid program in Pakistan is a whole-of-government effort which harnesses specific experience, skills and knowledge across a range of Australian Government agencies such the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
